Ancient ear ornament, Central/Western India, (300-500AD), gold, 10.78g. India has a long tradition of bead making with precious metals. In this piece, small globular beads are bound with wires and rhomboid beads using appliqué technique. The resultant ornament would be strung in the ear hole, with the cleavage pointing downwards, rather than being used as a stud. Many examples of such ear ornaments are seen in ancient sculpture. |
