Post Gupta-Coinage of East Bengal (Samatata) region, (c. 4th-5th Century AD), Gold Dinar, (Unlisted in standard reference works), 6.68g. Obv: King with nimbus around the head and moustache, standing wearing a long tunic, holding a torque in the left hand and clasping a trident with battle-axe attached to its shaft, in the bent of the elbow of his right hand. Hitherto unread Brahmi legend around. Rev: A nimbate male and female pair, or yugula, standing facing right, wearing draped clothes and holding small water pots in their hands. The male also appears to hold a fish. These attributes suggest that they might be river-deities or spirits. Retrograde Brahmi legend Shri Rajaya in the left field. |
