Group 8: Coins of Patalatoļata (पातालतोळत), a lesser-known king from West Marathwada / East Vidrabha region The coins of this ruler were first published by L B Verma in 'Numismatic Digest' but the legend was read as Patalatodata (पातालतोदत) and speculated to be a -Datta ending name, much like the Datta kings known from coins of Mathura or Tripuri. Prashant Kulkarni and others published further pieces from the Pusad aggregates in the 'Indian Coin Society Newsletter', contending the name to be Patalatarita (पातालतारीत). However, the legend quite clearly is Patalatoļata (पातालतोळत) as evident from a number of coins offered here. On some coins, his name appears to be written as Patalatola (पातालतोल). The issuer has no royal appellation preceding his name. This is by far the greatest number of coins of this rare and enigmatic ruler offered at a single instance. They are typologically related to 'Sebaka' type coins through their obverse and have a bold 'sunburst' symbol on reverse. They are classified in two major varieties: Variety 1 has the centre of the Sun shown as two concentric circles, while Variety 2 has it represented as a solid centre. There are subtle differences on obverse also: Variety 1 coins
have an arched hill before the bull while Variety 2 coins do not have it.
