Group 5: Coins attributed to 'Mahagamika' of the Sangama family These coins first featured in researches of V V Mirashi, who misread the legends as Saga Mana Mahasa and attributed them to a fictitious 'Saka' ruler 'Mana' of the 'Mahisha' country. His views were challenged by D C Sircar who contended that the legend was on coins was far from complete and that the extant legend indicated they were issues of 'Sangama' or 'Sangrama' family. Notwithstanding the Sanskrit bias in his arguments, further discoveries proved Sircar to be right. Although more coins of this category are now known since the debates of Mirashi and Sircar, it is still difficult to find pieces which show the legend to its full extent. 'Mahagamika' was a feudatory title, literally meaning the 'Great Villager'.
