Charles Rupee of Bombay, Silver, Rupee, in the names of Charles II and Queen Catherin of England, minted at Bombay Mint. An extremely rare coin to be offered for sale in a public auction. When the British established their rule in Bombay, they were in need of local currency. To overcome this shortage, they started minting coins in the name of the then British Monarch, Charles. However, these issues were strongly objected by the Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb on the pretext that the British were not rulers of the land and were not entitled to issue coins in their own name. As a consequence minting of these coins were stopped from immediate effect. That decides the extreme rarity of this coin. |
