Gwalior ? Silver rupee in the name of Shah Alam II, RY15, Shahjahanpur mint Shahjahanpur is the headquarters of the district of the same name towards located in South-Eastern Rohilkhand. In about 1775,when this coin was struck, it was under the control of Dundey Khan Shahjahanpuri,an ambitious Rohilla sardar. After the battle of Miranpur Katra, the territory was annexed by Shuja'a ud-Daula,the Nawab of Awadh. The coin could have been issued by any one of these two contenders.
Judging by the fact that it bears a Trisul as a mint-mark, it is more likely to have been an issue of Awadh. There is also a possibility of ' Shahjahanpur ' being identified with Shajapur, in Madhya Pradesh. This town was under the control of Gwalior and it is likely that a mint was operated here in 1775 under the aegis of Gwalior. The mint-mark and the general style of the coin would support this attribution. |
