Sultans of Gujarat, Mahmud Shah I, (1458/9-1511), Gold 1/2 Tanka, 5.5 gm Obv: in circle - Allah Rabbi ('Allah the Lord') in Tughra with date 906; around -Hamd ba-Mahmud Man Geh ba-'Alam Rasad ('Blessings from Mahmud may be spread around the World) Rev: Arranged in a circular fashion – Sikkah Am Az Bandageest Nusratam az Qadir Ast. ('The Coin comes from the Slave but the Victory comes from the God') Goron & Goenka list a Tanka of this type (G&G 80), however they do not give its weight. If we consider it to be that of a full Tanka, this coin weighing half as much must be regarded as unique and unreported. It is a significant coin for the Sultanate series, bearing poetic legends like no other coin does. A unique octagonal full Tanka with same legends is in the British Museum collection. |
