Tanjore (Nayakas or Maratha rulers,18th Century), Gold Fanam, 0.4g, Obv. Mythical lion facing right. Rev. legend in four medieval nagari letters 'Sri Sarabha' one each placed in quadrants formed by a double lined cross. Coins of this type have been attributed to Sarabhoji, the Maratha ruler of Tanjore (1712-1728). However, the style of letters is distinctly earlier than this date. It is therefore not certain if the legend rafers to Sarabhoji, the king. 'Sarabha' also means a mythical lion and thus it may even refers the obv. depiction. |
