Auction Date: 19-08-2023
Silver
Akbar (1556-1605) - silver rupee, 'Ilahi' type with ornamental borders, Agra mint, Khurdad 47, with additional word 'Rupiyah' inscribed on reverse below mint-name, KM 94.6, 11.16g.
Good very fine, Exceedingly rare.
During RYs 47 and 48 of Akbar, the mint at Agra issued an unusual series of coins which had denominations inscribed on them. So far, coins with denominational terms 'Rupiyah', 'Darb' and 'Charan' are known and these names are in accordance with the information quoted in the 'Ain-i Akbari for coins of one, half and quarter rupees. This was the first instance in which the word 'Rupiyah' ever occurred on a coin. Khurdad being the third month of the Ilahi calendar, coins dated in this month were for a long considered the earliest instance of the word 'Rupiyah' appearing on a coin. However, now coins of the preceding month Ardibihisht have also surfaced.

Akbar (1556-1605 AD), silver rupee, Agra mint, AH 977, unlisted in KM, 11.31g.
Very fine, Very rare.
The coin is of a rare variety where the name of the king is inscribed with the letter 'Ye' at the end in its 'lazy' or Majhool form thus creating an attractive calligraphic divider in the cartouche. The remnants of the mint-name, inscribed in the bottom quadrant, show that it is likely to have preceded by the epithet 'Dar al-Khilafat'.
