Copper
Hindu kings of Kashmir, Utpala dynasty - copper dinar of Nirjjita/Anirjjita varman (c.906), not listed in major publications, 5.79g. Obv: stylized representation of a seated goddess; Sarada legend Ani to right. Rev: stylized king standing facing left, sacrificing over altar; Sarada legend rjji(ta) below his arm.
About Extremely fine, Extremely rare.
The reign of Sugandha Rani ended in chaos. She was heavily under the control of mercenary soldiers called 'Tantrins' and 'Ekangas'. In order to make over the kingdom to some worthy person, she selected Nirjjita varman, son of Sukha varman and grandson of Shura varman, in the hope that being her relative, he would act according to her directions. But she was opposed by some of her ministers as her nominee was unfit for the kingdom on account of his bad habits. Nirjjita varman used to squander money and was extremely idle. The Tantri infantry separated themselves from her party, and made Partha, the son of Nirjjitavarmma, king. Copper
Hindu kings of Kashmir, Utpala dynasty - copper dinar of Queen Kshillika (regent for Chakra Varman, 923-933 AD), unpublished in major sources and of high historical interest and importance, 4.86g. Obv: Goddess, wearing large earrings, seated facing; Sharada inscription Shri to left and Kshilli to right. Rev: Stylized king offering sacrifice at an altar; Sharada legend Ka (Devi) to right.
Good Very fine, Extremely rare.
The name of Kshillika appears in verse 290 of the fifth book of Rajatarangini, the historical chronicle of Kashmir, written by Kalhana. She was the grandmother of Chakravarman who was put on the throne as a baby in the tumultuous aftermath of Sugandha Rani's reign, during which mercenary soldiery named as the 'Tantrins' controlled Kashmir. Kalhana mentions that Kshillika ruled as a regent for the boy king for ten years, after a short period of regency by Bappatadevi, who was Chakravarman's mother. With the discovery of a coin in her name, we add one more name to coins issued by female rulers in Indian Numismatics.
Similar coin was sold in our Auction 43, Lot no. 206 at hammer Rs. 82,000.

Copper
Hindu kings of Kashmir, Utpala dynasty - copper dinar of Chakra varman (923-933; 935; 936-937 AD), not listed in major publications, 6.14g. Obv: stylized representation of a seated goddess; Sarada letter Cha to right. Rev: stylized king standing facing left, sacrificing over altar; Sarada legend kkra below his arm.
About extremely fine, Extremely rare.
Cakravarman was yet another child-ruler; he went on to rule for ten years (till 933/934), for a few months under the regency of his mother and then, under grandmother Ksillika. A new revolution by the Tantrins then installed Suravarman I; he ruled for about a year before being compelled to abdicate the throne, after failing to raise the demanded bribes. The Tantrins then re-installed Partha but deposed within a very short time-span, as Cakravarman promised the Tantrins with even greater riches. After restoration in 935, he installed Tantrins at important offices but had to flee again, after failing to raise enough taxes.

It is evident from the legend that the coin was issued by a king whose name began with 'Vi' and ended in 'Deva'. It is not certain to which dynasty he belonged but it is possible that he was a Rashtrakuta feudatory, judging by the Garuda emblem.

Western Chalukyas or Feudatories (1000-1100 AD), gold gadyana, Unpublished in Mitchiner and Ganesh, 2.20g. Extremely fine, Extremely rare.
In 9th to 12th century, Shaivism dominated the political landscape in Peninsular India. This is reflected in the choice of the depiction of a Shaivite temple on this coin. The Sankha is always associated with munificence and plenitude. The legend most likely refers to the merit accrued by the issuer who might have been associated with building the temple.
