Copper
Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah (1847-1856 AD), copper ½ paisa, AH 1270/RY 8, Bait al-Saltanat Lakhnau Mulk Awadh Akhtarnagar mint, 6.05g. Obv: Farsi couplet Sikka zad bar Seem wa Zar az Fazl wa Tayeed Alah/Zill Haq Sultan 'Alam Wajid Ali Badshah. Rev: Coat-of-arms with number '12' in centre, mint-name and RY details around.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
The figure '12' in the center suggests a quantum of cowrie shells called 'Ganda'. Four cowries made a Ganda, thus 48 cowries corresponded to half a paisa. The coins of this rare type are always encountered beautifully struck, almost like the so-called 'Nazarana' style. They were perhaps a short-lived coinage issued specifically to bridge the use of non-metallic (cowries) and metallic (paisas) exchange media.

The figure '3' in the center suggests a quantum of cowrie shells called 'Ganda'. Four cowries made a Ganda, thus 12 cowries corresponded to an eighth paisa. This is a variety from a long series of copper Kachcha Paisas, most likely struck at one of the Sindhias' possessions in Central India. For each year, the symbol on the obverse (in this case, the horse) changes, suggesting that each variety was struck only for a year and the symbol was a date-code.
