Copper
Eastern Chalukyas/Pallavas - copper coin of Vishnukundin 'lion' type of uncertain attribution, (c.600-700 AD), unpublished in major sources, 1.91g. Obv: Lion with gaping mouth facing right; Pallava Brahmi legend Shri Seraha above. Rev: Shrivatsa between two lampposts within a rayed circle.
Extremely fine, Extremely rare.
It is not known what precisely 'Shri Seraha' means, even though the legend is pretty clear on this coin. It is of a type very closely modelled on the coins of Vengi Chalukya ruler Vishnuvardhana VI alias Vishama Siddhi so it is plausible that it is an issue of one of his successors, most likely Jayasimha I (641-673 AD).

Copper
Early Medieval Maharashtra, Khandesh region, 'bull' type alloyed copper coin of 'Vishnukundin' fabric, attributed to uncertain issuer (Kantavigraha?), probably a local Rashtrakuta ruler (c.600-700 AD), 1.22g. Obv: Bull standing facing right, Brahmi legend Shri Kanta Vigra (?) above. Rev: Elephant walking to right within a rayed circle.
About Extremely fine, Extremely rare.
Rare examples of 'bull' type Vishnukundin fabric coins of early medieval Northern Maharashtra are known to have animal reverses, instead of the usual Kalasha motif. A peacock, an elephant, a horse and a lion are known. The legend on this coin is tentatively read as 'Kanta Vigra’ and this might suggest a new king with a '-Vigraha' ending name.

Hindu kings of Kashmir, Utpala dynasty - copper dinar of Queen Kshillika (regent for Chakra Varman, 923-933 AD), unpublished in major sources & of high historical interest and importance, 6.06g. Obv: Goddess, wearing large earrings, seated facing; Sharada inscription Shri to left and Kshilli to right. Rev: Stylized king offering sacrifice at an altar; Sharada legend Ka Devi to right.
Extremely fine, Extremely rare.
The name of Kshillika appears in verse 290 of the fifth book of Rajatarangini, the historical chronicle of Kashmir, written by Kalhana. She was the grandmother of Chakravarman who was put on the throne as a baby in the tumultuous aftermath of Sugandha Rani's reign, during which soldiery named as the 'Tantrins' controlled Kashmir. Kalhana mentions that Kshillika ruled as a regent for the boy king for ten years, after a short period of regency by Bappatadevi, who was Chakravarman's mother. With the discovery of a coin in her name, we add one more name to coins issued by female rulers in Indian Numismatics.

Western Chalukyas of Kalyani, gold punch-marked gadyana of Someshvara II Bhuvanekamalla (c.1068-1076 AD), of 'temple' type, unpublished so far, 4.46g, W: 24 mm; H: 24.17 mm. Obv: In centre, an elaborate punch consisting of an architectural temple motif, with Kannada letter Shri beset in the finial (Kalasha) and Kannada legend Bhuvane / ka Malla in two lines in the sanctum. The central punch is surrounded by eight punches of a stylized scroll-like device. Rev: Blank.
Extremely fine, Exceedingly rare.
The reign of Someshvara II was plagued with two problems - the ambitions of his brother Vikramaditya VI to become the emperor and an invasion by the Cholas. Eventually, Vikramaditya managed to depose Someshvara. Coins of this monumental 'temple' type were also struck by Jayasimha II, the predecessor of Someshvara II; however this is the first time a coin issued by Somshvara II in such a type has come to light.

Two-and- half gold gadyana denomination, 9.33g, W: 60.20 mm; H: 61.04 mm. Unpublished variety and known for the first time. The primary layer of Nolamba punches look weak due to overstrike and consists of 2x Sri in Kannada, 14x Nolamba written in Kannada, 5x no. written in Kannada placed in a row beneath the feet of the warriors. The secondary layer of fresh punches consists of 1x central punch of four warriors standing and facing front, believed to represent Rama, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughan, 2x Sri in Kannada, 2x Kesari in Kannada.

Interesting specimen from numismatic point of view as this coin represents the transition of power from the Nolambas to the Kakatiyas. The above coin is from a small hoard that had a mix of Nolamba, Ganga, and Kakatiya coins. The hoard is believed to be of the mint and this is the unique coin.
