The Nabataean kingdom rose to power in the breakup of the Seleucid Empire. The Nabataeans grew wealthy from trade routes between east and west that ran through their territory. King Aretas II (c.110-96 BCE) struck the first identifiable Nabataean coins copying the types of Alexander the Great's gold staters. Later kings struck bronze and silver coins in a distinctive local style.

Julia Maesa was the sister of Julia Domna and grandmother of emperors Elagabalus and Severus Alexander. After her nephew Caracalla was murdered, Julia Maesa used her ample funds to successfully overthrow the usurper Macrinus and place her grandson Elagabalus on the throne. But his reign was a disaster and he along with his mother were deposed and killed by the Praetorian Guard. Julia Maesa wielded power in these years, but died soon afterwards.
