Gond Kingdom of Garha-Katanga, copper coin of Sangram Shah (1512-1542 AD), 8.27g. Obv: Lion with front paw raised facing left within a rectangle; Devanagari legend Shri Hariharaya Namah visible in parts. Rev: Traces of legend Shri Sangrama Sahi inscribed in Telugu (upper half) and in Devanagari lower half; the Nagari legend appears to be engraved retrograde.
Very fine+, Very rare.
The kingdom of Garha-Katanga was one of three Gond kingdoms, the others being those of Chanda and Devgarh. Little is known about the early history of the Garha-Katanga kingdom. Sangram Shah is the earliest of the rulers to be attested by historical sources, though his precise reign dates are not known. Most of his coins so far noted are square copper or brass pieces of various types. It is well-known that his daughter-in-law, Rani Durgavati, fought valiantly against the army of Akbar but unfortunately was defeated.
