Lot No.81
eAUC01
Hindu Coins of Medieval India
Auction Date: 06-03-2021
Silver
Eastern Bengal/Arakan region, silver unit of 'Harikela' type coinage (750-850 AD), MNC 503-505, 6.83g. Obv: Bull seated facing right, partly retrograde legend Harikela above; crude figure of Sankha shell behind the bull's rump. Rev: Ornate Shrivatsa symbol, surrounded by beaded garlands; crescent moon and sun above; a hole.
Very fine, Rare.
Usually, 'Harikela' coins have bull seated facing left, but it seems like the engraver of the obverse die of this coin was a novice and could not get all the details in the correct perspective - thus, the bull and some letters are engraved retrograde but the overall orientation of the coin is correct.

Yadavas of Devagiri, silver tara of Ramachandra (1275-1315 AD), 'Lion' type, 0.28g. Obv: Caparisoned lion facing right with paw raised. Rev: Retrograde Devanagari legend in two lines, Shri Rama/Deva.
Extremely fine, Rare.
It is highly unusual to find a lion looking right on coins of Ramachandra. But since the reverse legend is also retrograde it seems likely that both obverse and reverse dies were incorrectly engraved in this case.
