Copper
Gond rulers of Chandrapur as vassals of the Bhonsla Rajas of Nagpur, copper paisa, 11.99g, Chanda mint. Obv: Symbols like crescent and banner with putative date, Devanagari legend Mulak Cha[nda] below, partly visible. Rev: Quatrefoil design with retrograde letters Shri and Bho embedded in an arabesque.
Very fine+, Extremely rare.
The Gond kingdom of Chandrapur was a powerful tribal state of medieval India. The last of its rulers, Ram Sah and Nilkanth Sah, became vassals of Raghoji Bhonsla of Nagpur. In 1751, Nilkanth Sah drove away Shivajipant Talkute, the Diwan appointed by the Bhonslas and took control of the administration. Raghoji sent an expedition and defeated Nilkanth Sah, annexing his kingdom to Nagpur permanently. The coins of Chanda are very rare and judging by the fact that letters 'Shri' and 'Bho' are part of their design, it is likely that they were struck under the nominal authority of the Bhonslas.
