Nala dynasty of Bastar (Mahakantaraor 'Great Forest') region, king Varaha, c. 410-430AD, repousse or bracteate half unit in gold, 0.64g. Obv: Seated Nandi, a crescent above; legend ShriVa ha ra in box-headed Brahmi letters below. This is the only Specimen known that have seen in the trade.
Unpublished, Exceedingly Rare.
The Nalas of Bastar claimed descent from king Nala of the Mahabharata. Varaha or Varaha Raja, a contemporary of the Vakataka king Narendrasena, was the first ruler of the dynasty to strike coins. On this extremely rare half unit, the name of king is wrongly engraved as 'Vahara'insteadof 'Varaha'.

Very Fine+, Rare.
The Eastern Chalukya rulers continued minting their coins in the type of their predecessors, the Vishnu kundins. Vishnuvardhana I's issues have a clear legend 'ShriVishama Siddhi' above the lion, but in later issues the legend is often shortened.

These coins are found chiefly in North-East and North Maharashtra, the heartland of the early Rashtrakutas. The legend on the reverse is not fully read as yet despite being seen on several specimens, but type evidence suggests a Rashtrakuta attribution.
