The Cawnpore Woollen Mills is one of the oldest working mills of Kanpur, active since year 1869. It was one of the first ventures of the British residents of India, starting as a small mill named “The Woolen Mills Cawnpore” for the manufacture, chiefly, of army blankets. The company was set up in Kanpur with the obvious intension of getting the rich raw materials from the nearby fertile land of Ganga. In 1882 it was converted into a public company with limited liability. In 1914 the name was changed to “The Cawnpore Woollen Mills Co., Ltd.” With its close association with the army, it is no wonder that it sponsored a medal to be awarded for intra-armed forces sportsmanship.
