Baroda, Anandrao Gaikwad (1800-1819 AD), silver rupee, Jambusar mint, 11.32g, in the name of Akbar II, AH1228/RY8.
Very fine+, Very rare.
Jambusar was a town of considerable importance for cotton trade of Gujarat. Between 1772 and 1783, it was a British possession. In that year it was given back to the Marathas who in 1800, as part of revenue settlementsm handed it over to the Gaikwads. It remained in Gaikwad hands till 1817, when as a result of the final Maratha War, it was taken over by the British again. Gaikwad issues of Jambusar mint are extremely rare and known only for a couple of RYs. Evidently, the mint was operated for a short period and most likely stopped in response to the spread of the 'Surat' rupees of Bombay.
