Nizams of Hyderabad, unattributed 'Kachcha Paisa' of South Marathwada region, bearing 'Nagfani' or 'scissors' symbol, overstruck on a Shivarai paisa struck by the British in Pune mint, post-1819, 7.62g.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
Coins of this type were previously attributed to the Marathas, owing to the 'Nagfani' symbol often encountered on Maratha rupees of Pune mint. However, in recent times, this attribution has come under scrutiny and this particular coin conclusively proves that the type was struck after the Maratha rule had come to an end. It is most likely a component of the 'Kachcha' currency circulating all over Berar and Marathwada regions, owing to a stimulus in demand for small copper coins to make payments to the labourers in cotton farming industry.
