Awadh, Silver Coronation Medal of Ghazi ud-Din Haidar (1819-1827 AD), 78.60g. Obv: Three-quarters bust of the king, wearing Europeans-style crown, floral decorative patterns in the background; Farsi couplet in calligraphic composition around - Sikkah zad bar Seem wa Zar az-Fazl rab dhu'l-muneen. Ghazi-ud-din Haider Ala nasb Shah-i-Zameen, Sanah Ahd. Rev: The arms of Awadh within border of script.
Extremely Fine, Extremely Rare.
Awadh was declared an 'independent kingdom' on 9th October 1819 and Ghaziuddin Haider, the Nawab-Wazeer was now conferred with the title of 'King' by the East India Company. His coronation marks a break from the Indian courtly culture. He chose to adopt European symbols of kingship and was the first Indian king to do so. Thus, his crown and coat-of-arms have a clear European design. The designs for this medal and Ghaziuddin Haidar's coinage were made by court artists Roshan Lal and Jamiyat Rai. The latter chose to sign his work with the letter 'Jim' which is not present on this piece, so this must have been the artwork of Roshan Lal. Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka (IPKF), silver medal awarded by the 4th Batallion, Mahar Regiment, to commemorate battles of Kopai North and Uleru, unlisted in major publications, struck in or soon after 1987, 16.33g. Obv: Crest of Mahar regiment, legend 4 MAHAR below. Rev: Map of Sri Lanka, legend KOPAI NORTH 11-19 OCT above and 87 URELU 20 DEC 87.
Very fine+, Rare.
Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) was the Indian military contingent performing a peacekeeping operation in Sri Lanka between 1987 and 1990. It was formed under the mandate of the 1987 Indo-Sri Lankan Accord that aimed to end the Sri Lankan Civil War between Sri Lankan Tamil nationalists such as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan military.
One of the IPKF's most memorable battles was the liberation of Jaffna in late 1987, codenamed 'Operation Pawan'. The fiercest battles between the Indian Army and the Tigers were fought at Kopai North, Kokuvil and Kurruparai. An evacuation attempt at Urelu in December also saw a lot of action. The medal no doubt commemorates the bravery of Indian soldiers fighting the LTTE.
