Lot No.103
AUC34
Hindu Coins of Medieval India
Auction Date: 10-08-2019
Copper
Medieval Gujarat, unattributed copper coin of post-Gupta period (600-700 AD), issued most likely by feudatories under the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty, unlisted in major publications, 1.22g. Obv: Stylized figure of 'Lajjagauri', seated in a Yogic posture, holding lotuses in both hands. Rev: A fire altar in the centre with crude Brahmi legend around.
Very fine, Very rare.
The coin evidently copies the 'fire altar' type coins of Skanda Gupta, but the portrait on obverse is replaced by a figure of Lajjagauri. Both the fire altar motif and the goddess figure here are manifestations of the Sun Cult prevalent in medieval Gujarat.

Copper
Medieval South Gujarat/Sausrashtra, unattributed copper coin of feudatories under Rashtrakutas, with title '…valoka', (700-800 AD), unpublished, 1.39g. Obv: Swastika in centre; legend Shri Ka…valoka? Around. Rev: Vase in centre; uncertain legend around.
Very fine, Very rare.
A title ending in '…valoka' could mean this is a Rashtrakuta issue; however, the identification is tentative.

Copper
Medieval South Gujarat/Sausrashtra, unattributed copper coin of feudatories under Rashtrakutas, with title 'Madana Pratapa', (700-800 AD), unpublished, 0.49g. Obv: Horseman riding to right carrying a sword. Rev: Legend in two lines Shri Madana / Pratapa.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
The motif of the horseman suggests that this type may have been issued by a Rashtrakuta ruler, or one of their feudatories. The title 'Madana Pratapa' as yet is not corroborated by any other evidence, so it is difficult to say if this coin is an issue of a feudatory or Rashtrakuta branch of South Gujarat (Lata) or the imperial Rashtrakutas.

Gold
Western Chalukyas or Feudatories (1000-1100 AD), gold gadyana, 2.22g, Obv: Shaivite temple with architectural features like pillars, Vimana and Shikhara clearly visible, two banners and two temple lamps flanking it, Rev: Floral scroll emanating out from a Sankha shell with Hale-kannada inscription in the middle which begins with ”Punya”. Unpublished in Mitchiner and Ganesh.
Extremely fine, Extremely rare.
In 9th to 12th century, Shaivism dominated the political landscape in Peninsular India. This is reflected in the choice of the depiction of a Shaivite temple on this coin. The Sankha is always associated with munificence and plenitude. The legend most likely refers to the merit accrued by the issuer who might have been associated with building the temple.
