Auction Date: 14-12-2018
Copper
Maratha Kingdom, 'Swarajya' phase - copper ½ Kasu in the name of Rajaram (1689-1700 AD), most likely struck in a southern mint in the vicinity of Gingee, unlisted in major publications such as M&W, 1.89g. Obv: Nagari legend in two lines …Ra(ja) Ra(ma). Rev: Nagari legend Chhatra / tapi in two lines.
Very fine, Rare.
The legends are inscribed in crude style and with some mistakes ('tapi' instead of 'pati'). This was a common feature for southern mints, as the engravers here were less familiar with Nagari script than those from mints of the north. Rajaram set up his government in exile at Gingee after escaping from the fort of Raigad when it was captured by the Mughals following the arrest and killing of his brother, Chhatrapati Sambhaji. He was besieged at Gingee for many years, but ultimately managed to return to Maharashtra shortly before his death.

Silver
Maratha Confederacy, silver rupee in the name of Shah Alam II, Daulatabad mint, RY14, symbol of horizontal Linga on obverse and a trident on reverse, M&W 'miscellaneous' T17a, 11.21g.
Very fine, Very rare.
While the coin is surely of a Maratha mintage, the exact location of the mint is not yet ascertained. On some similar coins of this type, the mint-name is engraved as 'Daulatabad', which was a Nizam's mint and coins with the same RY having distinctly Nizam's symbols are also known. M&W have opined that “the Authors have no explanation for the issue of two distinct types of rupees in the same year from Daulatabad: one ostensibly Maratha and the other an issue of the Nizam”. More likely these coins were struck at a Maratha mint located in the same region, such as Malegaon to the North or Jalna to the South. Coins of this variety are very rare. 399.
