Ancient Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura - uninscribed copper unit of 'elephant and Swastika' series, (c.150-100BC), MAC 5047, 17.08g. Obv: Symbolic configuration - elephant with raised trunk facing left in the centre, Swastika standard in railing above, horizontal triangle-headed standard in between, three-arched hill to right and tree-in-railing to left. Rev: Swastika standard in railing in centre, triangle-headed standard and Triratna on either side, three-arched hill with wavy line below.
Very fine, Very rare.
The circular 'elephant and Swastika' type coins are mainly found at the Abhayagiri Dagoba in Anuradhapura. Coins of this type are the classic and largest of the ancient coins which are uniquely from Lanka. These coins found in Anuradhapura are struck with fine detail.
