Copper
Bengal Presidency, copper paisa, 6.24g. Sagar mint, in the name of Shah Alam II, fixed RY 45, Plain edge, Stevens EIC 8.142.
Very fine, Very rare.
This coin on obverse bears an unusual legend Ek Pai Sika Masa 6. Stevens, drawing upon a previous reading Ek Pai Sata Masa, speculates if this is a reference to 'seven Masha' the weight of the coin. The weight he lists is around 6.80g which would be equal to 7 Mashas, had that been intended. However, the legend on this coin makes it clear that the number of Mashas being referred to is 6 and the coin weighs around 9 gm which is a weight Stevens does not list, neither does it correspond to 6 Mashas. The coin is therefore enigmatic.
