Silver
Sultans of Delhi, Turks, Ghiyath al-Din Balban (1266-1287 AD), silver tanka, Khitta Nagore mint, AH xx4, G&G D156 (mint listed as 'Khitta Alwar'),10.88g. Obv: Arabic legend in rectangle with annulets above and below al-Sultan al-'Azam Ghiyath al-Dunya wa al-Din Abu al-Muzaffar Balban al-Sultan; mint-name partly visible in the margin. Rev: Arabic legend in rectangle with annulets above and below al-Imam al-Musta'asim Amir al-Mumineen; mint-name clearly visible in the margin as ba-Khitta Nagore.
Very fine, Very rare.
Coins of this type were previously listed as of 'Khitta Alwar' mint. However, on this specimen the mint-name is clearly written as 'Nagore’ and not 'Alwar'. In retrospect, it is evident that the initial letter has a hooked base on all coins, and on some pieces offered earlier at our and other auctions there is a clear nuqta above the hooked end.
Nagore was an important place for Balban – during the early part of his career when he was effectively a co-ruler with Nasir al-din Mahmud, he held the iqta'a for the province of Nagore. At the beginning of his reign as a Sultan after the death of Mahmud, he made the fort a base for his campaigns into Sindh to tame various local rebels. It is possible that coins were struck here to finance the troops carrying out Western campaigns.

Kayumarth was a three-year old boy when the nobles of his father Muizz al-Din Kaiqubad enthroned him fearing an attack from Jalal al-din Firuz Khalji and the incapability of Kaiqubad to face him. Firuz was however successful in his bid to power, and ascended the throne of Delhi, after defeating and murdering Kaiqubad and along with him the ill-fated boy Sultan Kayumarth. His coins are extremely rare.

Sultans of Bengal - silver tanka of Jalal al-Din Mahmud (1287), Hadhrat Lakhnauti mint, date off flan, G&G B84, (listed as RR), 11.04g. Obv: Arabic legend al-Sultan al-'Azam Jalal al-Dunya wa al-Din Abu al-Muzaffar Mahmud al-Sultan bin al -Sultan. Rev: Arabic legend in double rectangle al-Imam al-Musta'asim Amir al-Mumineen; date and mint details in margin.
Very fine, extremely rare.
Jalal al-Din Mahmud was an ephemeral Sultan who appears to have seized power for a year or two, immediately after the death of Balban who quelled the rebellion of Mu'izz al-Din Tughril. It is possible that he was a son of Tughril and for at least one year, his coins struck at Lakhnauti overlap with the issues of Nasir al-Din Mahmud alias Bughra Shah, the son of Balban, suggesting a struggle for power in which Bughra Shah emerged successful. Jalal al-Din Mahmud's coins are struck from 'land tax of Banga', i.e. Eastern Bengal and it is likely that he launched raids in the province to bring forth tribute to stabilize his rule.
