Archaic silver punch-marked coin of a type of uncertain provenance and attribution, struck to the Vimsatika standard, with symbolic configuration ABBC. Most likely it belongs to a series from the middle Gangetic Valley. The symbols are entirely geometric and composed of intricate whorls, 4.46g.
Very fine, Very rare.
These coins have appeared on the market before with varied provenances ranging from Bharatpur to Jaunpur. As such they have been attributed to various 'Janapadas', like 'Matsya' but these attributions remain speculative. About very fine, Extremely rare.
The coins with Tamil Brahmi legends are probably the earliest inscribed coins in South India. 'Peruvazhuti' refers to a Pandya king who, according to tradition, performed several Vedic sacrifices. His full name, as mentioned in songs of the Sangam literature, was Palyagasalai Mutukutumi Peruvazhuti.
