Gold
Bharatpur, reign of Suraj Mal (1755-1763 AD), gold mohur struck in the name of Shah Jahan III, AH1174/RY Ahd, Mahindrapur mint, 10.82g.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
The year AH1174 (beginning in 1760AD) was a tumultuous one for politics in Delhi. The Marathas occupied Delhi after evicting the invading Afghan forces. Suraj Mal was a Maratha partisan and also sided with the Wazir Imad ul-Mulk against the scheming Afghan courtier Najib Khan Rohilla. In late 1759, Imad murdered emperor Alamgir II and placed Shahjahan III on the throne. His reign was brought to an end in 1760 by the Marathas, who deposed him and announced Shah Alam II to be the emperor in absentia, to placate Shuja'a ul-Mulk of Awadh.

Bharatpur, silver nazarana rupee in the name of Victoria, struck in the reign of Jaswant Singh (1853-1893 AD), Brijendrapur mint, 1858AD/VS1914. Obv: Profile bust of the Queen wearing a coronet in centre; Farsi legend Malika Mu'azzamah Farman Rawaye Inglistan ("Mighty Queen Ruling Over England"), date below. Rev: Farsi legend Sikka-i-Zul Iqtidar Angrezi Sarkar ("Coin of the uph older of the trust of the English Government") Zarb Brijendrapur followed by mint -marks of star and dagger and VS date, 25.21mm.
Fine+,Very rare.
This handsome coin is one of the earliest issues in the name of the Queen Victoria struck by a princely state. The date 1858AD is important here - it was the year in which the Great Indian Revolt saw its slow extinguishing and many princes came out in open support of the British government. Bharatpur was one of the first to show these tendencies - it is likely that coins with the Queen's effigy were struck immediately after the 'Queen's Proclamation' issued on 1 November 1858 which effectively ended the rule of the East India Company and made the Queen the sovereign head of state of India. The curious title "upholder of the trust of English government" is suggestive of the role played by the Maharaja by siding with the British during the Revolt.

Bhopal, Hayat Muhammad Khan (1777-1808 AD) as Nawab with Wazir Muhammad Khan as regent (1766-1816 AD), silver rupee of Shuja'alpur mint, in the name of Shah Alam II, symbols of fly-whisk (Chauri) and a long javelin on reverse, AH 1219/RY 4x, 11.18g.
Very fine, Very rare.
The town of Shuja'alpur, located about 90 Km from Bhopal, originally belonged to the Sindhias, but went through a transient phase of occupation by Bhopal, during the 2nd Anglo-Maratha War, courtesy the political alignments and predatory campaign carried out by Wazir Muhammad Khan. In 1808, it fell to the Pindari leader Karim Khan, who operated on behalf of Daulat Rao Sindhia. The British confirmed it to the Sindhias at the end of the 3rd Anglo-Maratha or 'Pindari' War. Silver rupees struck during the Bhopal occupation are exceedingly rare with less than five pieces known to have survived. On them, the symbols of Bhopal affinity are clearly evident.
