Copper
Eastern Chalukyas, alloyed copper coin of Kubja Vishnu Vardhana (624-641 AD) in 'Vishnukundin' fabric, 1.23g. Obv: maned lion standing with one paw raised, with tail curled on the back, facing right; Brahmi legend '...(sha)ma Siddhi' above. Rev: shrivatsa symbol between two lamp stands, enclosed in rayed circle.
Very fine, Extremely rare.
Vishamasiddhi' was a title adopted by Vishnuvardhana, who was appointed as the governor of Vengi by his brother the Chalukya emperor Satyashraya Pulakesi. The coin is interesting for two reasons - firstly, it is a small fraction, hitherto unreported, and secondly, it depicts the lion in a typical 'Pallava' fashion and the style of letters in the legend is also close to Pallava style. The Pallavas and the Chalukyas were enemies of each other.
