Gold
Hoysalas of Dwarasamudra, uninscribed gold fractional Fanam, (1100-1200 AD), unpublished in Ganesh or Mitchiner. 0.11g. Obv: Stylized lion and crescent. Rev: Nimbate human figure seated cross-legged with right hand raised into a gesture.
Extremely fine, Extremely rare.
Hoysalafanams of this series are known to bear representations of 'Dasavatara' or the ten incarnations of Vishnu. A seated nimbate figure, with one hand raised (probably making the gesture of reassurance), in the scheme of incarnations can represent the Buddha. The coin here therefore constitutes the unique instance of a late medieval numismatic depiction of the Buddha and is therefore of utmost iconographic importance.
