The weight-loss was the result of the coin's burial in the sea. From the wreck of the British East Indiaman ship, the Arniston, which sank off the coast of South Africa, by the village of Waenhuiskrans. Of the 378 persons on board, only six survived, and later, the town was renamed Arniston, as it is known to the present day.

This issue was intended for the trade with the Malabar Coast of India.
