Hindu Coins of Medieval India
Auction Date: 10-04-2016
Copper
Medieval Maharashtra, alloyed 'Vishnukundin' type Coin attributed most likely to the Kumbhakarna dynasty of Thalner in Khandesh region, 4.05g. Obv: Humped bull facing right; Brahmi legend Shri Ranavigra above. Rev: Sankha shell between two lamp-posts within a rayed circle.
Very Fine+, Rare.
Coins akin to the Vishnukundin fabric, but showing bull instead of lion, are known chiefly from Northern Maharashtra, through an area stretching from Khandesh to Vidrabha along the south banks of Tapi-Purna river systems. They can be tentatively attributed to local dynasties such as the Nikumbhas, the Kumbhakarnas and the Rashtrakutas.

Gold
Early Medieval North Karantaka, Gold die-struck/punch-marked Gadyana attributed tentatively to the early Kadambas of Hangal (800-900 AD), attempted with piercing for jewellery (thus two prominent indentations), MCSI-I no. 234, 3.71g. Obv: A temple with uncertain figurines under its roof within a dotted border; four stylized lion punches struck on it. Rev: Floral scroll within a dotted border, partly obliterated under the obverse punches.
