Silver
Akbar (1556-1605 AD), Silver ¼ Rupee or 'Charn', Agra Mint, Bahman 47. Obv: Ilahi creed Allahu Akbar Jalla Jalalahu. Rev: Charn Zarb Agra Bahman Ilahi 47.
About Very Fine, Unique so far & a Historically Important Coin.
In section 10 of the Ain-i Akbari, Abul Fazal Allami, the chronicler of Akbar's reign gives a comprehensive list of coins under the title “The Coins of the Glorious Empire”. In sub-section 2, which deals with 'silver coins', we find the following information regarding the nomenclature of the coins: (a). The Rupee is round, and weighs eleven and one half máshahs. It was first introduced in the time of Shér Khán. It was perfected during this reign, and received a new stamp, on one side 'Alláhuakbar, JallaJaláluhu', and on the other the date. (b). The Jalálah is of a square form, which was introduced during the present reign. In value and stamp it is the same as (a) (c). The Darb is half a Jalálah. (d). The Charn is a quarter Jalálah. (e). The Pandau is a fifth of the Jalálah. (f). The Asht is the eighth part of the Jalálah. (g). The Dasá is one-tenth of the Jalálah. (h). The Kalá is the sixteenth part of the Jalálah. (i). The Súkí is one-twentieth of the Jalálah. The same fractional parts are adopted for the [round] Rupee, which are however different in form.” It is evident that barring the first name, that of the rupee, the others are derived from the Indian tradition. The name of the quarter rupee derives from चरण, the Sanskrit word to mean 'one fourth'.

Copper
Akbar (1556-1605 AD), Copper Dam (5), Dar al-Khilafat Agra Mint: (a) with Fi Tareekh legend on obverse and Sikka Fulus, with Agra placed below Sikka on reverse, AH 966, 20.78g. An early issue with lithe calligraphy and full AH date in words. The AH date in numbers is absent in this variety. (b) with Agra written above Khilafat in the mint-name, AH 977, 20.70g. (c) with dotted line dividing inscriptions on both sides, AH 982, 20.57g. The 'dotted divider' type was used for Ahmedabad, Chainpur, Agra and the rarer mints of Anhilwara Patan, Shahr Patan and Daulatabad 'urf Baroda. The Agra coins have AH date on both sides. (d) with Khilafat, AH 985, 20.82g. For a brief period before the introduction of the 'Allah' type, the epithet of Agra changes to 'Khilafat' from 'Dar al-Khilafat' indicating it was not a seat of Caliphate, but the Caliphate itself. This is interesting considering Akbar's interest in kingship and divinity at this time. (e) with Allah inscribed in the centre of reverse, AH 987, 20.67g. The word 'Allah' appears on Dams of Agra mint for a brief period. It is interesting that Akbar was grappling with the concept of divinity around the same time. (5 Coins)
