Dhrangadhra, 'Coronation' commemorative medal for Maharaja Mayuradhwaja Simhaji (1942-1948 AD) in Gold, (Not listed in McClenaghan), 28.33g. Obv: Bust of Maharaja in centre, name and titles around, VS date 1998 below truncation. Rev: Royal cipher under a coronet; Sanskrit, Gujarati and English legends around.
Uncirculated, Extremely Rare.
McClenaghan lists this medal in silver gilt as a 'special class', assumed to be for certain members of the royal family, as the highest r a n k awarded. This specimen, struck in solid gold, must certainly supersede this class. No gold medal is noted by McClenaghan. Although the medal was instituted in 1942, its award were differed till the after the end of the Second World War. A HuzurHukum dated 3rd March 1948
announced the award of these medals, and the State of Dhrangadhra acceded to the Indian Dominion on 25th March 1948.
