Ancient India
Auction Date: 21-12-2013
Silver
Archaic Silver punch-marked coin from lower Betwa river system (Erich area), (c. 400-300 BC), attributed to 'Erikachha' Janapada, (not in Rajgor or MATEC), 1.65g. Obverse has four punches in ABBB configuration – 1x 'lotus' and 3x '3-S symbols'. ABBB configuration (two designs - A & B used; B punched thrice to make a total of four punches) is not found on any punch-marked series of Indian sub-continent. The 3'S' symbol is a hall-mark Kosala symbol and its appearance on this coinage suggests influence of Kosalan coinage on the coinage of 'Erikachha'. As such, this particular variety is very important.
Very Fine, Extremely Rare.
MATEC lists similar coins as nos. 3743 to 3756, from 'Hamirpur district, SW Uttar Pradesh', but this variety is not represented.
