Gold
Eastern Chalukyas, attributed to 'Rajyabhushana', c. 11th-12th century AD, gold scyphate (cup-shaped) repousse Gadyana, 3.65g. Central punch - tiger facing right; legend in eight individual punches around - 'Sri, 'Sri', 'A', 'Na', 'Na', 'Si', 'Ga', 'Da'. The meaning of these letters is unclear.
Extremely Fine, Very Rare.
Snigdha Tripathy published similar coins in his book 'Early and Mediaeval Coins and Currency Systems of Orissa' (pp. 106-7, pl. L). A hoard of 28 coins was found in 1957 in Dumadei Reserve Forest area under Kodinga Police station in Koraput district of Orissa. They are preserved in the Orissa State Museum in Bhubaneshwar. According to Tripathi, twenty-seven of the coins read 'Rajyabhushana' and one reads 'Prapatigandabhairava' However, this cannot be verified. These names and titles are known from the inscriptions of the Naga rulers of Chakrakotta, modern-day Chhattisgarh-Orissa border. Few more such coins have been discovered in the Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh. The central punch indicates these are issues of the Eastern Chalukyas.
