Gold
Portuguese India - gold 1/2 manoel of Manoel I o Venturoso, "the Fortunate" (1495-1521 AD), Goa mint, undated, Gomes 20.04, 1.62g. Obv: inscription MEA below crown; pellet below crown. Rev: armillary sphere set on base.
Extremely fine, Very rare.
Dom Afonso d'Albuquerque conquered Goa in November 1510 from the Adil Shahi sultanate, after an earlier unsuccessful attempt. Soon afterwards, the Portuguese etablished a mint following representations by local traders that commercial activity in Goa had been suffering due to the scarcity of coinage. Albuquerque struck new coins in weights corresponding closely to the local Hon standard, but named them "Manoel" and "half Manoel" in honour of the king of Portugal. These are the earliest coins issued in India by any colonial power.

Copper
Portuguese India, Diu - copper 2-reis, undated but believed struck in 1715, Ferraro Vaz #B.28, 2.18g. Obv: royal arms of Portugal (shield and crown) resting on a cross of the Order of Christ. Rev: a shield with crenelated top with the number '2’ followed by two horizontal lines.
Very fine, Very rare.
Ferraro Vaz cites Fenelon Rebello for the attribution of these unusual type of coins - three denominations are known in the series: two, seven and fifteen reis with the smallest being the rarest. They were in all likelihood struck during a period when availability of copper was low and issuance had to subsist on sporadic imports, thereby making a long type series impossible. Hence the odd design of the coins.
