Cobra Kai’s Peyton List leads School Spirits, a high school drama combining the mystery of Pretty Little Liars and the supernatural elements of Wednesday. After her shocking death, Maddie (List) wakes up in the afterlife and meets other high school kids stuck in limbo who refuse to pass on.

Because Maddie is the only one in the group who can talk to the living, she uses her powers to investigate her death. What she finds is that her death was not an accident, but a murder. Who killed Maddie? As she gets closer to the truth, Maddie uncovers dark secrets and troubling lies.

It’s 1990, and Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) is 10 years old in Young Sheldon season 2. Sheldon’s family is coming to terms with their son being a genius. George Cooper Sr (Lance Barber), Sheldon’s father and high school football coach, tries his best to understand his son, even if it rarely happens. Mary Cooper (Zoe Perry), Sheldon’s mother, is extremely overprotective of her son.

Georgie (Montana Jordan), Sheldon’s older brother, grapples with being in the same classes as his younger brother, while Sheldon’s twin sister, Missy (Raegan Revord), becomes one of his best friends. Finally, there’s Meemaw (Annie Potts), who might be the only person to accept Sheldon’s gifts and talents.

From 2016-2022, comedian Stavros Halkias hosted the popular podcast Cumtown with Nick Mullen and Adam Friedland. Now, Halkias headlines his first comedy special for Netflix, titled Fat Rascal. Filmed at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas, Fat Rascal showcases Halkias’ eccentric personality as he riffs on breakups, air travel, sex, and tech culture.

Not one to shy away from raunchy humor, Halkias closes the special with a 15-minute story about a failed threesome. Don’t be surprised if Fat Rascal becomes the first of many Netflix specials from the popular comedian.

You’ve never seen World War II brought to life like this before. That’s the tagline of the new docuseries World War II: From the Frontlines. Narrated by John Boyega, the eight-part series explores WWII from all sides and depicts some of the war’s most noteworthy moments through archival footage.

Episode topics include Hitler invading Poland, Operation Barbarossa, the Battle of Stalingrad, D-Day, and the invasion of Berlin by the Allied Powers. If you are a war history aficionado, From the Frontlines will be your new favorite series.

Sheldon Lee Cooper became one of The Big Bang Theory’s most iconic characters. Travel back in time to witness the birth of a genius in Young Sheldon, the spinoff prequel to The Big Bang Theory. In the fictional town of Medford, Texas, in 1989, Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) is a child prodigy with expertise in science and mathematics. Sheldon has an extraordinary mind, leading him to attend high school at age nine and college at 11.

However, being brilliant has its drawbacks, especially when trying to fit in with people who love football and the church. Even his family struggles to live with Sheldon’s wisdom, but they try their best to support their son in the best way they can. Knowing where Sheldon ends up in The Big Bang Theory, fans will love exploring his childhood and seeing how these years shaped him into the man he would become.

In 2021, Squid Game premiered on Netflix and quickly became a global phenomenon. The series featured 456 contestants playing children’s games for a chance to win nearly $40 million. The only catch is that if you lose, you die. This deadly twist contributed to Squid Game becoming Netflix’s most-watched series. Inspired by the drama series, Netflix created Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition series where real people have a chance to win a huge prize.

In the new show, 456 contestants compete to win the $4.56  million, the largest single cash prize in game show history. While wearing their signature green tracksuits, the contestants play children’s games from the show, such as Red Light Green Light. Like the show, only one person will be left standing. Thankfully, no one dies after being eliminated, so you don’t have to look away.

To put it lightly, Dr. Paolo Macchiarini was a living legend in the medical world in the early 2000s. The Italian doctor was considered a revolutionary for creating synthetic trachea transplants with stem cells. This surgery allegedly could save lives. Yet, a disturbing trend started to appear when the patients who received the transplants kept dying.

Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife explores Dr. Macchiarini’s meteoric rise to fame. Journalists had evidence to support the theory that Dr. Macchiarini’s work was fraudulent, but his employer defended him. The docuseries explores Macchiarini’s eventual fall from grace and how it changed the landscape of the medical field.

Saving the world is hard enough, but try doing it while intoxicated. From the trio that created Cobra Kai comes the new action dramedy Obliterated. An elite team of special operatives, including Navy SEAL Chad McKnight (Nick Zano) and CIA Officer Ava Winters (Shelley Hennig), are called to Las Vegas to stop a nuclear device from destroying the entire city. The team completes the mission and saves the day, which calls for a celebration.

Let’s say the team works hard and parties harder as they celebrate with drugs, sex, and alcohol. There’s only one problem: the device was a fake, meaning the nuclear device is still active. Drunk and high, the team must fight through their headaches and save the day before their hangovers kick in.

Add My Life with the Walter Boys to the list of popular adaptions of Wattpad novels, which include After and The Kissing Booth. The young adult series revolves around Jackie Howard (Nikki Rodriguez), a 15-year-old living a life of luxury in Manhattan. Jackie loses her family in a tragic accident, leaving her parentless. Jackie is forced to move to rural Colorado to live with her legal guardian, Katherine (Sarah Rafferty), her mother’s best friend.

Katherine lives with her husband, George (Marc Blucas), and their 10 children. While trying to navigate her new life, Jackie develops feelings for two of Katherine’s kids: Alex (Ashby Gentry), the nerd of the family, and Cole (Noah LaLonde), the troublesome former quarterback of the high school football team. Love triangles are never easy, but falling for members of your new family opens an entirely different can of worms.

Moving (2023)

The Sunday night 9 p.m. slot on HBO is one of the most coveted spots on television. This timeframe is where HBO places its best dramas. These shows usually garner high viewership and become awards season darlings, especially at the Emmys. The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Succession, House of the Dragon, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us aired in the prestigious 9 p.m. hour. When The Idol received the 9 p.m. slot in June 2023, HBO essentially said, "This is important, and you need to watch it." Yet, HBO learned a valuable lesson: there are no guarantees in life, even in the Sunday night 9 p.m. slot.

Nearly 1 million people tuned in for the first episode of The Idol. By the end of the five-episode first season, many viewers, including myself, decided that was enough Tedros for one lifetime. HBO agreed and canceled the series. Declining ratings and high costs were some of the reasons behind the cancellation. However, the negative reception from critics and audiences likely sealed the show's fate. Much of the criticism about The Idol was warranted, with some calling it the worst show of the year. Others have said it's one of the most controversial shows ever. My problems with the show stemmed from the puzzling creative decisions made by co-creators Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd. Good premise but terrible execution

Many new shows dominated the conversation this year, including The Last of Us and Beef. Other shows returned with new seasons in 2023, like Ted Lasso, You, The Bear, and The Mandalorian.

A handful of shows released this year, however, didn’t get as much attention as they deserved. These were standouts for their respective streaming services and received rave reviews from critics and audiences who watched. But they fell under the radar. Chances are you either didn’t watch or didn’t consider watching until a friend, family member, or colleague gave the show an enthusiastic recommendation. Consider these our recommendations for the six most underrated TV shows of 2023. Shrinking (2023-)
